A sneak peak into Greek exhibitions in Athens this October (pics)

The Athens art trail brings an abundance of color!

Herakleidon Museum (37 Apostolou Pavlou Street, Thisseion, tel 211-0126486)

The exhibition “The amazing inventions of the ancient Greeks” presents functional models of some of the most extraordinary ancient Greek inventions, from the “robot-servant” of Philo and the “hydraulic telegraph” of Aeneas to the “cinema” of Hero, and from the automatic clock of Ctesibius and the astrolabe of Ptolemy to the “analog computer” of Antikythera – a selection of the exhibits of the Museum of Ancient Greek Technology Kostas Kotsanas that operates at Katakolon port and Ancient Olympia, which were constructed after a long and extensive study of ancient Greek, Latin and Arabic literature, information from vase painting and the few relevant archaeological finds.

Runs through to January 10. Admission is at 4 euros, or 6 euros for an interactive guided tour (10 euros if the guided tour has interactional activities with the exhibits). Open from Monday to Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Closes at 8 p.m. on Thursday evenings.

HERAKLEIDON

Acropolis Museum (15 Dionyssiou Areopagitou Street, tel 2109000900)

The relationship between the ancient Greeks and their gods is explored in the display titled “Samothrace: The Mysteries of the Great Gods”. As an introduction to the Mysteries of Samothrace, an assortment of finds has been selected from the site of Mikro Vouni, located a few kilometers southwest of the sanctuary, where excavations have revealed a settlement with an organized social structure of the 2nd millennium BC. Of particular importance are the Minoan stamp seals and seal impressions with representations of a double ax and fish, which have counterparts at Knossos. Perhaps the ancient tradition that gave rise to the Mysteries originated in prehistoric Crete and from there spread to other places, where it became the basis for subsequent historical developments.

Runs through to January 10. Open on Monday from 8 a.m. to 3.30 p.m., from Tuesday to Sunday from 8 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. Closes at 9.30 p.m. on Friday.

Ekfrasi – Yianna Grammatopoulou (9a Valaoritou Street, tel 210-3607598)

17 sculptors from San Francisco and eight from Athens engage in a conversation through their works, titled “Magic Carpet Ride”. Runs until October 17. Admission free, open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday.

Benaki Museum (138 Pireos Street, tel 210 3453111)

* The 8th Biennale of Young Greek Architects takes place at one of the most critical periods of contemporary Greek history. This year’s 214 participants, during the crisis, are encouraging, as they are demonstrate a continuing interest on the part of young Greek architects towards the institution of the Biennale, an important stepping stone for the wider promotion of architecture.

Runs through to November 8, with admission at 4 and 2 euros. open on Thursday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

* Tony Kragg pushes forth to a new abstracted understanding of figures. He plays with the notion of compression and expansion.

* An exhibition dedicated to the multifaceted work of Dimitris Davis runs through to November 29.

Eikastikes Anazitisis (21 Speysippou Street, tel 2103632785)

Dimitris Pantazis’ painting exhibition is titled “Body Testimonies”. He explores the way in which the body expresses internal and mental processes through the act of painting.

Runs from October 6 – November 7, with free admission. Open on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday and Saturday.

EIKASTIKES

Gagosian Gallery (3 merlin Street, tel 210 364 0215)

David Balula harnesses all forms of natural matter (solid, liquid, gas, fire), as well as manmade structures and systems (architecture, virtual networks) to generate paintings, sculptures, photographs, performances, and site-specific interventions. He engages these forces to fuel contingent artistic gestures.

Runs through to December 19, with free admission. open from Monday to Friday between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Eleni Korneou Gallery (cnr of 30 Dimofontos and 7 Thorikion sts, tel 210 3411748)

Nick Mauss presents his first solo exhibition at the gallery. His diverse art encompasses drawing, sculpture and performance. For this exhibition, Mauss created a new body of work, consisting of drawings on fabric that are mounted on aluminum.

Runs through to November 28, with free admission. Open from noon to 6 p.m. from Tuesday to Friday and from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Bernier Eliades Gallery (11 Eptahalkou Street, Thiseion, tel 210-3413936)

Tony OUrsler presents projects focusing on the development of human identity through techniques used in facial recognition technology. he focuses on modern initiatives that create machines to interpret and measure human expressions.

Runs through to November 19, with free admission. Open from Tuesday to Friday between 10.30 a.m. and 6.30 p.m. and on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.

BERNIER

Athens International Airport (Attiki Highway, Spata, tel 210-3537227)

Athens International Airport hosts Dimitris Alithinos’ photography exhibition “A journey with one body”. The exhibition consists of 26 photographs that make up a landscape made up of detailed human bodies photographed around the world. Photos taken in Lyon, Valencia, Cuzco, Kathmandu etc from 20-30 years ago construct a human body.

Runs through to December 31. Open 24×7, with free admission.

Frysira Museum (3 Monis Asteriou, Plaka, tel 210-3234678)

Pericles Goulakos and Marilena Zamboura reveal through this exhibition what it is like for a couple to coexist in a day to day personal and artistic basis. How do they interact? Is it possible to attain one’s artistic autonomy? What is the impact of their family relationship on their artistic profile? This exhibition provides a unique opportunity to set side by side the works of two very significant Greek artists while at the same time it provides us with an interesting insight into the common life of an artistic couple.

Runs through to November 29. General admission is at 6 euros with discounts at 3 euros. Open from Wednesday to Friday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends.
