Acharnes mayor has declared a state of emergency for the municipality

The storm drains at the streets had been cleaned a week ago but the town needs major anti-flooding works.

Acharnes mayor Yiannis Kassavos has declared a state of emergency for his municipality, due to the extensive damages caused by Friday’s torrential rain, at a meeting that was held on Saturday morning.

The purpose of the meeting, that was also attended by the Deputy Head of the Attica region, Mr. Petros Philipou and other representatives of local authorites was to record the damages of private and public property.

Based on the findings of the inspection that took place in the morning at the area of Acharnes, many stores at the commercial centre of the municipality have sustained heavy flood damage, with major losses in inventory.

Additionally, there are many sinking spots and asphalt pavement damages on the roads throughout the city and dozens of homes have been flooded.

Several families in the area have lost all their belongings and were forced to abandon their homes. The municipality has arranged for their stay in a hotel, but no-one knows when they will be able to return to their homes.
