Alexis Georgoulis: The legal committee of the European Parliament voted to waive immunity

With 19 votes “for” and zero “against” the immunity of the former SYRIZA MEP

The competent Legal Affairs Committee of the European Parliament unanimously decided to lift the immunity of MEP Alexis Georgoulis for the case of abuse against Eleni Chronopoulou, at noon on Tuesday.

19 MEPs voted in favor while there was no vote against and no abstentions.

In particular, the European Parliament received a letter dated March 30, 2023 with the request of the Belgian prosecutor’s office to lift the immunity of Alexis Georgoulis.

The request was made in the context of a complaint made on June 24, 2021 against Alexis Georgoulis for crimes allegedly committed in January 2020.

Alexis Georgoulis waived his right to be heard by the JURI committee and conveyed his desire to have his immunity lifted as soon as possible in order to continue the judicial investigation.
