Austrian ECB banker: No money to Greek banks

ATM queues continue

Talks in Brussels between the Greek delegation and the EU institutions might be ongoing in an effort to reach a final-hour solution and avert a country leaving the Eurozone for the first time, but back in Greece the suffocation of the Greek economy continues. The banks are still closed, pensioners line up for their weekly (!) 120 euro allowance, while trading and market activity having virtually come to halt. Under these bleak conditions, it might not have come as encouraging news to hear Austrian central banker –and ECB board member- Ewald Nowotny calmly but squarely rule out any possibility of an upping the level of emergency liquidity to Greek banks. Last week Greek government officials had assured the public that banks would open Monday or Tuesday, something that did not happen.
