ANEL leader Kammenos tapped as new DM

Coalition partner given sensitive post

The head of the small, rightist Independent Greeks (ANEL) party, Panos Kammenos, appears as the odds-on-favorite to assume the defence minister’s portfolio, with deputy minister posts also going to MPs from his party.
Kammenos’ assumption of the ministry’s helm reportedly came during a Monday morning meeting, when a deal for post-election cooperation between the two sides – and ideological opposites – was finalized. ANEL’s 13 deputies in Parliament are now expected to give a vote of confidence when new PM Alexis Tsipras presents his new government.
Kammenos’ political history began in the 1980s as a member of ND’s youth wing, culminating as a minister in ND governmets, before he broke off and formed his own formation, the Independent Greeks.
