Crete: Explosion on the passenger ship “Blue Horizon” – Four men are injured

One of the injured men is intubated

An explosion occurred in the boiler of the passenger ship “Blue Horizon” which is moored in the port of Heraklion in the early hours of Monday.

According to information, there are four burn victims, one of whom, the 30-year-old engineer of the ship, has been seriously burn injuries. The other three have been slightly injured.

The ship’s engineer is being treated in critical condition at the University Hospital of Heraklion, who according to information from the hospital has burns on a large area of ​​his body. The 30-year-old engineer was closer than the other three at the scene of the explosion and as a result his clothes and a large part of his body are burned.

At the moment he is intubated in the Intensive Care Unit.

The other three sailors, aged 45, 34 and 27, who were near the explosion in engine room, are being treated with minor burns in the emergency room of the University Hospital of Heraklion.

The accident took place during maintenance work on the ship’s boiler.

The passengers had disembarked when the explosion occurred.

Ambulances rushed to the spot and picked up the burn victims.

The damage, however, to the ship’s engine is not significant and it will execute its planned route to Piraeus at night.

Representatives of the ship-owning company, are from the first moment next to the four injured, to offer them every possible help.
