Dubai seeks cause of hotel fire at New Year

Among the possible scenarios are arson, terrorist attack and human error

The authorities in Dubai are trying to find out what caused the fire that engulfed the five-star luxury hotel, Address Downtown Hotel on New Year’s Eve.

The fire broke out at about 21:30 local time (17:30 GMT) and appeared to engulf most part of Address Downtown within 10 minutes, as BBC reports.

The firefighters battled the blaze for hours, while 14 people had suffered minor injuries, one moderate injuries and there was one “heart attack case” due to “overcrowding and smoke”, as the Dubai government stated.

A BBC reporter says a significant fire is still visible on the 20th floor, where the blaze apparently started.

The cause of the fire, though, is still unknown, while among the possible scenarios are arson, terrorist attack and human error.
