EasyJet to serve passengers budget water from hydrogen battery waste

Feeling grossed out by the thought? Don’t be! The water is potentially the purest, cleanest water

British low-cost carrier EasyJet unveiled designs for a hybrid plane to be used on a trial basis later this year, but also announced the claim that passengers with the budget airline may be served water created as a waste product from hydrogen batteries as part of its plans for zero emissions fuel system.

Explaining the concept behind the reuse of water, EasyJet’s Engineering Chief Ian Davies said: “I think we could reuse the water. It’s absolutely pure. Why would we throw water away when it’s absolutely pure?” He said it could be used for flushing toilets, and even be served to passengers as drinking water. Davies says it is potentially the freshest, cleanest water.

A hydrogen fuel cell would be stored in the aircraft’s hold with energy captured as the brakes are deployed during landing to power the jet when it is on the ground, similar to the energy recovery system of Formula One engines.

As a result of the changes, EasyJet would be able to save around 50,000 tons of fuel for its fleet per year and save $US25-35 mln.EasyJet hopes to launch the hybrid plane within the next decade.
