EC releases emergency funds for Chios and Lesvos refugees

Funds aimed at improving healthcare and other basis needs at reception camps

The European Commission (EC) announced on Monday it would grant additional emergency aid worth € 6.48 million to Greece for the improvement of conditions in reception facilities on the islands of Lesvos (Kara Tepe) and Chios (Souda). According to the EC statement, the funding is intended for the UNHCR for the provision of services, such as food, water and sanitation, as well as offering protection to vulnerable groups, education and healthcare. Based on official EC data, a total of € 361.82 million has been allocated in emergency funds to Greek authorities and international organisations operating in Greece, besides the € 509.5 million already released within the framework of the 2014-2020 national programmes.
