No more scrounging around for tickets

The board of the Athens’ Public Transport Organization (OASA) approved the completion of the first phase of a plan to replace or paper public transportation tickets and cards with an electronic ticket in Athen’s transportation system. The new system will be ready for implementation in 2016.

The project totaling 58.8 mln euros of which 49% (28.812 mln euros will be funded by the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF) and 51% from equity of the contracting company TERNA Energy and South Korean LG.

The electronic ticket will be available to all public transportation passengers whether bus, trolley, tram, metro and suburban railway. Charges will be based on the distance and frequency of use.

The deal includes the provision of supply and installation of the cancellation machines in all transport, as well as fare control equipment, and installation of entrance gates on metro stations and the suburban railway, which will open with “smart cards” and will be “charged” to pay proportionally to use
