First same-sex marriage for EU leader a reality in Luxembourg

Luxembourg PM Bettel ‘ties the knot’ with long-time beau

The first same-sex marriage of an EU leader is a reality as of Friday, with Luxembourg Premier Xavier Bettel wedding Belgian architect Gauthier Destenay at Luxembourg’s town hall.

The nuptials come months after the Grand Duchy’s parliament legalized marriage between people of the same gender.

The ceremony for Bettel took place at on late Friday afternoon.

Icelandic Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir is apparently the first head of government to marry a same-sex partner, doing so in 2010.

“I could have hidden it (sexuality) or repressed it and been unhappy my whole life,” he told a Belgian broadcaster, before adding: “But I told myself that if you want to be a politician … you have to be honest with yourself and to accept that you are who you are.”

Roughly 500 guests were invited to a ceremony afterwards. No word on whether a specific Greek MP in the current government coalition was invited.
