Gov’t is looking for houses to host migrants in Evros, Alexandroupolis mayor says

He believes that more than 6,000 refugees, mainly Muslims, will be transferred to Evros and stay there for at least two years

The mayor of Alexandroupolis, Vangelis Lampakis, revealed that the government is looking for houses to host refugees and migrants in Evros region, northern Greece in the framework of UNHCR and European Union program.

According to Mr. Lampakis, 86,000 refugees are to be hosted in Evros and other five places of Greece, based on a joint ministerial decision signed recently.

He believes that more than 6,000 refugees, mainly Muslims, will be transferred to Evros and stay there for at least two years, as of March 2016.

As the mayor revealed, the local authorities found out by chance that the government’s officials visited the area to see if there are available properties where refugees and migrants could be hosted.

The mayor said he will not allow the government to implement such a decision, especially in an area where are many Muslim residents.
