Some might be given to needy Greeks, says Orthodox Priest

The Greek Orthodox Community of Brisbane in Australia has gathered a ton of different basic home items and clothes for the refugees in Greece and plans to ship them to the ‘old country’ soon. The Greek diaspora of Brisbane in Queensland managed to gather items of basic necessities like blankets, clothing, pillows and canned food that were then passed on to St. George’s Orthodox Church, which in turn filled up several containers and intends to ship them to Greece to alleviate the suffering of the refugees crossing into Europe. Some even sent plant seeds for the refugees. Speaking to Australia’s state broadcaster ABC, Father Tsakas said people had brought tens of boxes with food, while local Greek businesses were sending pallets of rice and pasta. ‘At first I feared we would not even fill a container, but now we have 3 or four full’, said Tsakas. He added that because of the overwhelming response of the Greeks in Brisbane a lot of the items could be given to Greeks in need due to the economic crisis. The containers will be sent to three NGOs based in Athens.
