Heatwave with over 41C temperatures until Sunday

The Health Ministry cautions people to avoid outdoors and tiring physical work

The Health Ministry warned that Greeks should avoid going outdoors over the next few days after the National Meteorological Service (EMY) warned of a heatwave until Sunday. Temperatures would reach as high as 41C until the weekend and run for two to three days.

A rise in temperatures is expected on Wednesday with temperatures ranging between 16-36C, and between 18C-38C in southern parts of the country.

EMY believes that temperatures will start to drop on Saturday afternoon due to northerly winds.

The Health Ministry has advised hospitals and health centers to be on alert for patients suffering from heatstroke or other effects of the sun and heat. People over the age of 65 years should be particularly careful, especially those suffering from long-term illnesses.

The Health Ministry’s Advice
* avoid going out in the sun
* find a cool and shady place
* wear light-colored and light clothing and have a hat or parasole handy
* avoid hard and tyring physical work
* eat properly and drink lots of water and juices, avoid alcohol and a high-calorie diet
* babies should be given regular showers
