European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker told German newspaper ‘Handelsblatt’ that he was cautiously optimistic of a deal between the EU and Turkey on the refugee crisis. ‘We shall reach a deal with Turkey within the next days, based on what has been prepared at the last Summit. I am reservedly optimistic on the outcome’, said Juncker. The President defended the agreement to readmit refugees into Turkey, despite criticism that this would entail a breach of the Geneva Convention on refugees. Juncker underlined that cooperation with Turkey should not be interpreted as any kind of acceleration of Turkey’s EU accession course. ‘Turkey is not currently ready for EU admission. I do not believe she will be ready even in ten years’.
