Main opposition ND party leadership election fiasco… new election date sought!

Monday was to mark a new start for the ND party, but its back to the drawing board after IT problems at Sunday’s elections

The main opposition conservative New Democracy party decided to call off its leadership election that was due to take place on Sunday, November 22, due to technical problems that prevented voters from casting their ballots. The party’s electoral committee decided to postpone the voting procedure after the fiasco was noted. Party members are now embroiled in a blame game and a deus ex machina is sought so as to prevent a total meltdown.

The party’s electoral committee (KEFE) is meeting at 1 p.m. on Monday to decide on a new framework in accordance with the New Democracy party’s guidelines.

Many from within the party point to the problems noted during the election as a “black page in the history of ND”. Both KEFE President Andreas Papamimikos and ND interim leader Evangelos Meimarakis avoided making any public comments.

Meimarakis had from the start been dubious of the electoral system, now it seems that he was justified and the selection of a new credible IT base is necessary for a new election date from December 6 to 13.

Current leader Vangelis Meimarakis, MP and former Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis, MP and former Minister of Administrative Reform and e-Governance Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Central Macedonia Prefect Apostolos Tzitzikostas are candidates for ND leaders.
