MP N. Nikolopoulos’ tweet on “faggots” sparks friction

Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Xavier Bettel didn’t lose his calm when responding to the tweets but the same cannot be said for Greek politicians

A tweet by Independent MP Nikos Nikolopoulos that mocked Luxembourg Democratic Party Prime Minister Xavier Bettel’s decision to take advantage of his country’s “gay marriage” law did not go unnoticed. The tweet – in Greek – referred to a Europe of “faggots”, and prompted the reaction of Bettel, who asked for a translation. Nikolopoulos did not translate but he did try to deflect responsibility by stating that he copy-pasted an article from a blog. Bettel, who knows Greek after studying martime law and ecclesiastical law at Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, responded with a second tweet that was reassuring to Greek people who don’t hold the same view as the Greek MP.

Diplomatic friction was averted and the matter could have been left at that had Deputy Foreign Minister Dimitris Kourkoulas not entered the Twitter wars with a double tweet in half English/half Gringlish and French.
