New rules for sunbeds, umbrellas on beaches

Rules to enhance the experience at Greek beaches

A decision by the ministries of Finance and Interior means new practices for businesses renting spaces on beaches for the operation of bars and cafes. The new rules mean that Greek municipalities will be able to rent prime spots beside the beach to enterprises for up to two years, however they will need to share 20-30% of the sum of profits with the state.

The decision also sets stricter guidelines concerning the operation of sunbeds and beach umbrellas. There needs to be a five meter distance from the sea instead of the current three-meter distance restriction. Furthermore, tables and chairs are banned from the beachside as are wooden decks unless these are wooden walkways to facilitate easier access to bathers to and from the sea.

Mobile canteen areas have also been slashed in half to 15 square meters.
