New Turkish PM Yildirim loves Greek isle of Oinousses disputed by Turkey (photos)

Oinousses close to western coast of Turkey

The new Turkish PM and head of the ruling AK party, Binali Yildirim, who replaced Ahmet Davutoglu, is a frequent visitor to the small island of Oinousses, which is located off the north west coast of the Greek island of Chios and only 8km west of the Turkish coast. This piece of news would not be of any interest if Turkey had not consistently disputed the island belonged to Greece.

As local Chios newspaper ‘Politis’ reports, Yildirim, who was then Turkey’s Minister of Transport visited the isle of Oinousses on July 20 last year, going through all the required police and customs check points. It was revealed that he had visited the island 3 more times in the past. Turkey has repeatedly disputed Greece’s ownership of a number of small isles in the Aegean Sea and has taken a belligerent stance with many Figher jets flighing over the islands and violations of Greek airspace.
