Nine-year-old Greek girl impresses Australian MPs

Young Christa proved with her speech that hearing loss is no barrier to education and social inclusion

Nine-year-old Christa Dracopoulos impressed Prime Minister Tony Abbott with her speech in the Power of Speech Awards, held at federal parliament in Canberra last Tuesday.

Christa, who was one of 12 children from Australia and New Zealand who took part in Awards, proved with her speech that hearing loss is no barrier to education and social inclusion, neoskosmos site reports.

Young Christa impressed the 150 guests of the event, including the Governor General of Australia Sir Peter Cosgrove and the Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

The event, staged by the philanthropic organization the Shepherd’s Centre, was a celebration of the remarkable achievements of children who are deaf or hearing impaired, which are possible thanks to the life changing technologies available nowadays, and the early intervention programs.

The nine-year-old Greek girl is one of the children who have benefited from the technologies available to them in Australia, thanks to a cochlear implant.
