Over 123 kilos of contraband tobacco seized by Greek authorities in Patra

State stood to lose 31,000 in tariffs

Greek central port authorities seized over 163 kilos of contraband cigarettes at the western dock of Rio in Patra, in northern Peloponnese. The illegal cargo was discovered in the trailer of truck on board a ferry from Italy, during a check by coast guard officers. The 43-year old truck driver was transporting 6 cartons of tobacco that had no legal transit documentation. 1,300 Euros and the cargo were confiscated by the port authorities and the man was taken in custody and was charged with violating the Customs laws. According to estimates the Greek state would have lost up to 31,000 Euros from the contraband tobacco.
