Papastratos donates scanner to help govt tackle illegal tobacco trade

The state has a weapon to help it cash in on millions of euros in taxes

Papastratos, the Greek affiliate of Philip Morris International, donated a mobile x-ray scanner for the Ministry of Finance to use in its vehicle inspections while combatting the illegal tobacco trade and tax evasion. Alternate Finance Minsiter Tryfon Alexiadis approved the donation whose use will reduce the high level of illegal tobacco consumption in Greece – believed to be around 21.8% in the first quarter of 2015. As a result, the state misses out on millions of euros in taxes.

The scanner comes to change all that as it will help check trucks and containers in trafficking hot spots, such as ports and close to the country’s borders.
