Parthenon Marbles debate at UK House of Commons on Monday

Liberal Democrat MP wants marbles to be repatriated

Liberal Democrats MP Andrew George is urging the British governemnt to reunite the Parthenon Marbles at the British Museum with those of the Acropolis Museum. The marbles, part of the frieze of the 2,500-year-old temple were removed by Lord Elgin under controversial circumstances 200 years ago. Greece wants to see them returned as the country maintains that they were illegally taken.

George is urging his government to “demonstrate that Britain is prepared to reunite these British-held Parthenon sculptures with those now displayed in the purpose-built Acropolis Museum in the shadow of the monument to which they belong, the Parthenon in Athens.”

The Marbles Reunited organization is lobbying for the return of the sculptures and has called on the UK government ot respond to an invitation issued by UNESCO concerning mediation over their repatriation.
