The temple lies at the heart of the island and is dedicated to the god of wine and revelry. Huge marble phalluses, stiffly sit in various states of disrepair. According to Thucydides, the ancients believed in the sacredness of the island that nobody was allowed to give birth or to die here for fear of offending the gods.
