Pierre Moscovici says Europe should not act ‘nationalistic’ on refugee crisis

French Commissioner was responding to Hungary’s PM Urban

European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs Pierre Moscovici said Europe’s response to the refugee crisis should not be nationalistic, in statements he made from Ankara Turkey, where he is attending talks of world financial leaders. His response came in light if a recent statement by Hungary’s Prime Minister, Victor Urban that the influx of refugees into Europe threatened the continent’s Christian roots. “Our answer must be in line with our history and our values, in line with what Europe is about”, Moscovici told reporters on the sidelines of the meeting of Financial Ministers and central bankers from the world’s top 20 economies. He added that ‘to be European means to care about humanity and to care about human rights’. Hungary’s PM Victor Urban had written an opinion piece in Germany’s Frankfurt Allgemeine Zeitung supporting that the people of Europe were at odds with the majority of governments on the refugee crisis.
