PM Samaras: National elections by the end of 2015

We must elect a President of the Republic, conclude our negotiations with the country’s lenders and then have the national elections , he said

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras underlined in his message to the Greek people on Sunday, December 21, that political uncertainty must come to an end in order to avoid early National Elections.

“Our national duty is to elect a President of the Republic, conclude our negotiations with the country’s lenders and then schedule the national elections to take place even by the end of 2015,” said Mr. Samaras.

In his address, the Prime Minister outlined his proposal for overcoming the crisis by pursuing consensus for the election of the President of the Republic, expanding the composition of the current government and calling National elections by the end of 2015.

More specifically, he mentioned the following: “The Greek people do not want early elections. And they are right. On our part, we do what is required by the Constitution in order to serve the country’s best interest and achieve the election of the President of the Republic elected by this parliament.”

“We cannot exit a period of uncertainty only to immediately enter another. The country’s problems cannot be allowed to stagnate in a permanent pre-election period,”said Mr. Samaras.

In his address, the Prime Minister lashed out against Alexis Tsipras, the leader of the main opposition SYRIZA party, accusing him of being behind the alleged MP bribery attempt story that is currently under investigation by the Greek Justice.
