Political leaders did not reach agreement on social security issue

The main issues discussed were the refugee issue, the social security reforms and the revision of Constitution

Although the government has already agreed with Greece’s creditors on the social security and pensions reforms since July 2015, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and President of Independent Greeks Panos Kammenos tried to blackmail the leaders of the opposition parties in today’s leaders’ meeting in order to support them in their decisions.

The meeting started on Saturday shortly after 12 and lasted about 6 hours.

Potami leader Stavros Theodorakis, Pasok president Fofi Genimmata and Centrists Union leader Vasilis Leventis arrived first at Maximos Mansion for the scheduled leaders’ meeting.

New Democracy interim president Giannis Plakiotis arrived shortly after accompanied by Giannis Vroutsis and Giorgos Koumoutsakos. With a 10-minute delay president of ANEL Panos Kammenos arrived at Maximos Mansion followed by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras who was accompanied by Olga Gerovasili and Dimitris Tzanakopoulos.

The main issues discussed were the refugee issue, the social security reforms and the revision of Constitution.

Mr. Tsipras proposed at the political leaders’ meeting to form two separate committees where all parties would participate: a committee for social insurance and a committee for the revision of Constitution.

New Democracy interim president Giannis Plakiotakis, PASOK leader Fofi Genimmata and Potami leader Stavros Theodorakis rejected the proposal.

Mr. Tsipras also proposed to the political leaders to sign a joint statement for the social insurance which was also rejected by the political leaders.

According to Prime Minister’s associates, Mr. Tsipras came back with a second proposal. He asked the political leaders to issue a joint statement mentioning that no further reductions in pensions should be applied.

The political leaders rejected again his proposal since they reportedly thought that Mr. Tsipras was trying to trap them and that the social security reform had already been decided by the government and the creditors.

Then, Mr. Tsipras presented to political leaders details of the pension reductions applied based on the first two Memoranda from 2010 to 2014. “You have the nerve to say that this was the worst memorandum, when these reductions applied during your term of service?” said Mr. Tsipras according to government sources.

No agreement was reached on the social security issue till 18.30 when political leaders began leaving Maximos Mansion after the six-hour debate.

According to information the statement which is being drafted will include a detailed joint statement of the political leaders on the refugee issue as well as ways of dealing with the huge flow of people reaching Greece daily in view of tomorrow’s EU-Turkey summit.
