Pope Francis weighed in on the conversion of the Hagia Sophia by Turkey, following the recitation of the Marian Prayer and recalling Sea Sunday.
The Pontiff made reference to the Basilica of Hagia Sophia while dwelling on the sea, saying it made him think about what is happening in Constantinople.
This week President Tayyip Erdogan announced his decision to turn the UNESCO World Heritage site, which operated as a museum back into a mosque causing a global backlash.
“I think of Hagia Sophia”, said Pope Francis, “and I am very saddened.”
Sea Sunday is an annual event which remembers seafarers in prayer and for the vital work they do.
