Reuters: Schaeuble quoted as warning against ECB raising liquidity to Greek banks

He added, earlier, that ‘no’ in referendum doesn’t mean Grexit

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told MPs of his ruling party on Tuesday that he would advise the European Central Bank not to raise the ceiling for liquidity to Greek systemic banks, Reuters quoted participants at the meeting as saying.

A day earlier, the powerful German Finance Minister was quoted as telling three individuals — who wished not to be identified — that Greece would stay in the euro for the time being even if voters rejected a a bailout proposal by creditors in a referendum on July 5.

He also said the European Central Bank (ECB) would do what was needed to protect the euro if the Greeks voted against the bailout terms in the July 5 referendum.

“Our goal remains to keep Greece in the euro regardless of the referendum result,” said Antje Tillmann, a lawmaker for German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union. “It’s up to Greece itself to decide whether it wants to stay in the eurozone.”
