After Sasha, Babis and Byron…comes Sifis. The amiable Rethymno crocodile has been monopolizing the spotlight for the past few days. However, he is not the only one in Greece.
To this day, at least three more crocodiles live in our country. Acquired by their current owners, their purchase was lawful by pet shops and they are the de facto attractions in their areas.
At the same time, however, animal welfare organizations are asking the government to adopt stricter measures to combat illegal reptiles trade, but also to introduce a register which will detail all “domesticated” crocodiles in Greece, noting that there are cases where reptiles are lead to roam helpless even in the center of Athens, as happened in May 2012, on Acharnon street with a small Nile crocodile.
