Spetses touted as a summer alternative to Davos

Efforts to drawn the world’s political and economic elite to Greece

The Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) government hopes to turn the island of Spetses in the Saronic Gulf to a summer conference center rivaling Davos in the Swiss Alps. Saronic Magazine reports that Spetses was the island that Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Dimitris Mardas had hinted at during his speech on the debate on government’s policies in Greek Parliament.

The magazine refors to sources for a huge plan to make the island a drawcard for world-class conferences such as those of the World Economic Forum. The island is viewed as ideal for this thanks to facilities, such as those of the prestigious Anargirios School.

The world’s political and economic elite would be able to enjoy the scenic island, famous for its picturesque old harbor, horse-drawn carriages, grand mansions and cobblestone streets. The island is remote enough to be an ideal as a summer alternative to Davos thanks to the fact taht cars are banned with those on the island limited to residents.
