Sporadic violence in downtown Athens near rally on Fri.

Usual ‘anti-state’ group of around 500 again takes advantage of political tension

The first reports of street violence on Friday afternoon cited a group of 500 so-called “anti-state” activists attacking riot police with clubs and other objects near the “no” rally – incidents, however, that have occurred repeatedly in the past in central Athens.

Police responded with tear gas and stun grenades against the group, many of whom were equipped with gas masks or wearing full-face balaclavas – a recurring image of various anti-state, anti-establishment “rubbles” in European capitals.

Other reports cited attacks against foreign journalists covering “yes” and “no” rallies in central Athens on Friday.

Earlier scuffles were reported between anti-state youth and members of the far-left Antarsya group, as well as with supporters of SYRIZA, the ruling party.

At least one arrest was made in an incident recorded by a nearly a dozen TV cameras.
