Syrian nabbed trying to enter Turkey with car full of ammo

Suspect claims .22mm rounds destined for more ‘secular’ rebels in Syria…

A Syrian man was intercepted by customs officers over the weekend just before he was about to enter Turkey with a hidden carload of 95,000 rounds of .22mm ammunition.

The suspect, reportedly aged 28, carried a fake British driver’s license and was driving a car with Austrian plates.
He claimed the ammunition was destined for the “Free Syrian Army”, although a further investigation is underway.

The case has attracted the attention of intelligence services, given that authorities consider the entire operation, from bogus documents to the professional manner in which the contraband was hidden, as pointing to a more sophisticated smuggling network.
