SYRIZA: Post-election scenarios and possible alliances

Tsipras may even appeal to New Democracy for a vote of confidence

Main opposition SYRIZA party’s key objective, five days ahead of the Greek general elections, is achieving absolute majority, hence the pressing dilemmas posed recently by Alexis Tsipras for the undecided citizens, the conservative voters and the supporters of the Greek Communist Party.

Nevertheless, SYRIZA leader Tsipras has started recently to talk more openly about his party’s plans, if SYRIZA fails on Sunday to get the 151 seats that are required to form an outright government.

According to information, Tsipras intends to ask for a “vote of tolerance” whether his party wins absolute majority or not. This move will follow a series of gestures of good will, that may include the offering of a government post to non-SYRIZA MPs of wider acceptance or the nomination of a center-right candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, in order to promote national unity.

SYRIZA will most likely appeal to all parties of the Greek parliament for a vote of confidence, except of course the far-right political forces, like Golden Dawn.

The main opposition is expected to ask for the support of anti-European parties such as KKE and also of pro-European forces such as To Potami, PASOK and KIDISO, former PM George Papandreou’s newly formed party. Tsipras may even appeal to New Democracy, especially if Samaras is no longer the top dog, due to internal party developments.
