The great Cypriot composer Giorgos Kotsonis has passed away

He served the CBC for 35 years and had great contribution to the cultural life of the island

The major Cypriot composer Mr.George Kotsonis, passed away in the age of 77. He was a former director of the Third Program of Cypriot CBC. He served the CBC for 35 years and had great contribution to the cultural life of the island. In a sign of honor and appreciation to the diseased, Radio RIK has diversified its programs.

The Board of Directors, via the President Mr. Giorgos Tsalakou, stressed that the deceased was not only a mainstay of public broadcasting, but an inspired creator, who brightened the firmament of Greek culture.
Giorkos Kotsonis was born in 1937 in Nicosia. He graduated from the Samuel Commercial School, and studied at the National Conservatory of Athens. After his return to Cyprus, he worked as a music teacher in schools of Middle Education for four years.  He also took part in the armed national liberation struggle of EOKA for union of Cyprus with Greece.

In 1964 he joined the CBC, which he served for 35 years. Among the most important works of Giorgos Kotsonis is  considered to be the folk oratorios of “St. Tilliria” and “Blessed now and forever” and set to music “Praise and Lament for Cyprus”, “Lady of the Vines” and “The Lost Second Lieutenant of Albania” .
