The IMF ‘concerns’ about Argentina

Argentina will have to repay in full the two hedge funds that had failed to negotiate in the past with Buenos Aires

On Tuesday, the International Monetary Fund expressed  its concern on the “effects” that might spring from the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court , which refused to consider Argentina’s appeal against two hedge funds, as this litigation could threaten the future debt restructurings.
“We are concerned about the possible broader implications on the whole financial system,” IMF said in a terse statement
On Monday, after a long legal battle, the Supreme Court substantially upheld  the first decision based on which, Argentina will have to repay in full the two hedge funds that had failed to negotiate in the past with Buenos Aires, after the countries partial default, back in 2001.

Special analysts point out that the verdict could set a future example to other creditors towards refusing any compromise with countries facing problems, with the hope that eventually they will be able to obtain the entire debt.
“We are reviewing this decision with the utmost care,” added the IMF.

Since spring of 2013, the IMF warned that the legal battle between Argentina and the speculative capital, could lead to “serious impact” on future debt restructurings “giving greater power” to creditors. A few months later, however, the IMF, under pressure from the U.S., refused to intervene in favor of  Argentina in Supreme Court.
