The surgeon of the ”Evangelismos” hospital accused of bribery has been suspended

He had asked the patient for 1,500 euro – The maximum penalties that can be imposed are an official reprimand, deprivation of 10 months’ allowances, and 2-year long freeze of career promotional development.

The Greek Minister of Health, Mr. Makis Voridis, ordered the immediate suspension of the heart surgeon Mr. Anthony Tsouka of the “Evangelismos” hospital, on the grounds of bribery and extortion at the expense of 67 year old deceased Dimitri Papadopoulo and his family, as he demanded 1,500 euro to operate on him.

The surgeon was indicted last Thursday by the Board of Directors of the hospital and is to appear before the Disciplinary Council of the 1st Health Region.

The doctor will be checked for the disciplinary offenses of “obtaining financial benefit or any kind of illegal gain in return for the exercise of his duties” (Article 107, per.1d, Law 4057/12) and “undignified, improper or unworthy employee conduct on or off duty “(Article 107, approx 1e, Law 4057/12).

The maximum penalties that can be imposed by the Disciplinary RAL are an official reprimand, deprivation of 10 months’ allowances, and 2-year long freeze of career promotional development.

At next week’s meeting the Appellate Disciplinary Body is expected to officially convey the case to the Central Disciplinary Board of the ministry.
