Tsipras warns of inability to pay IMF tranche if Europe discontinues financing

ECB funds are, as of yet, still not released

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will send a clear message that if the problem of the country’s financing remains unsolved until the end of the week or by the 8th of April, then the government will choose to leave the IMF tranche unpaid in order to be able to pay salaries and pensions. Alexis Tsipras will seek to “cauterize” the lenders’ stance, since the country has been paying the required tranches since last August on its own without having received the agreed-upon tranches from the debt refinancing program.

The Prime Minister basically repeats the stance he clarified in his letters to Merkel and Hollande, in which he described the liquidity and financing problem which the country faces due to the unwavering stance of the lenders and their tactic to cut off all financing from the ECB and lending.

At the same time, two consecutive non-papers by the government caused a certain amount of confusion, concerning the possibility that the 450 million IMF tranche’s repayment, something which seems to reinforce the opinions that have Mr. Tsipras sending a warning to the IMF that if European lenders do not reinstate the financing of the country then Athens will be unable to pay their tranche to the IMF. The government seems to want to ignore the possibility of a credit event which will bring about unforeseen but obvious ramifications.
