On the surface, the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party could be seen as a direct anti-Semitic threat, however, pro-migrant — of the regular or “irregular” version — SYRIZA could also be seen as a threat to Israeli interests.
- The Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA), Greece’s new government, has in the past aired pro-Palestinian positions, as the party often identified with the Palestinian cause and in its calls for an end to Greece’s high-profile military cooperation with Israel. Lawyer Nikos Constandopoulos, one of Tsipras’ predecessors, had offered his legal services for alleged Arab terrorists arrested in Greece. Last year, during a March in Athens against Israel’s Operation Protective Edge against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Tsipras said the “world should make every possible effort so that Israel ends its criminal attack and brutality against Palestinians”. He also expressed support and solidarity to the Palestinians, especially noting that the “killing of children” was unacceptable.
- Golden Dawn leader Nikos Mihaloliakos and five other deputies are behind bars, facing accusations of being part of a criminal group that attacks migrants and leftists, and following the stabbing of an anti-fascist rapper in 2013. Several of the party members have been seen using the Nazi salute.
