Ukraine: Government reinstates mandatory conscription

The Ukrainian government one year ago had abolished the mandatory conscription of male citizens of the country aged over 18 years old

The Ukrainian authorities decided today to put back into effect from September the measure of mandatory conscription as the country in the past four months is facing a bloody conflict in the eastern part of the country between pro-Russian separatists and armed forces.

According to the head of the council Mihajlo Koval, after an emergency meeting of the President of Ukraine Petro Porosenko stated that : “The Council of National Security and Defense has decided to resume the military service (…) in the fall” .

The Ukrainian government had abolished one year ago the mandatory conscription of male citizens of the country over 18 years old ago in a process of creating a completely professional army.

According to Ukrainian news agency Interfax, the Council stated that the new recruits will not be sent to war zones, but did not specify the duration of the term of military service.
