UN concerned over failure to clear Cyprus’ minefields

“Both sides are withholding access to the remaining minefields in the buffer zone”

The UN has said it remains ready to help the two sides in Cyprus develop a roadmap to creating a mine-free island, should there be the political will to do so.

UN spokesperson in Cyprus, Aleem Siddique, was invited to comment on the latest Security Council resolution renewing its peacekeeping mandate which noted with “regret that the sides are withholding access to the remaining minefields in the buffer zone, and that demining in Cyprus must continue”.

It also called for a rapid agreement on restarting demining operations and clearing remaining minefields.
