Varoufakis calls deal ‘humiliating’ in parliament

The agreement is a minefield of euphemisms

Former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis dubbed the new deal agreed upon Tuesday between the Greek government and its international creditors as ‘a minefield of euphemisms’, during his intervention at the Greek parliament, Thursday. The Greek parliament is in a plenary session to discuss the new bailout bill which has to be passed through the national assembly before a rescue loan of 86bln Euros is released by the ESM to the crisis-stricken country, so that it will avoid defaulting on a loan payment to the ECB due August 20. Varoufakis said ‘all of us with some experience from memoranda should gather and come up with a new lexicon for Troika speak’, he said. He gave his support to Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos and Minister of Economy Giorgos Stathakis saying they did everything possible within a limited framework of a ‘humiliating agreement’. He insisted that the deal was not viable, while he criticized the fact that there was no provision for debt relief in the agreement
