Violence breaks out at migrant reception center on Samos

Migrants light fires in protest over living conditions, reports

Violence broke out at a migrant reception centre on the eastern Aegean island of Samos on Tuesday afternoon when roughly 250 migrants at the facility lit fires, reportedly over poor living conditions there.

Police forces were dispatched to the centre, in the harbour town of Vathi.
The recent influx of illegal immigrants, mainly through landings on Greek isles, generated a firestorm of political tension in Athens.

According to reports, some 1,400 people – alternately identified as refugees, asylum seekers, migrants, illegal migrants, undocumented migrants, irregular migrants, economic migrants – have reached Greek territory over the past 48 hours – most having disembarked from neighboring Turkey.
