Tensions between one group of foreign nationals, identified as asylum-seeking Syrians, and a group claiming to be from Afghanistan, erupted into a mini riot on Monday on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos.
The island has bore the brunt of Turkish and Mideast migrant smugglers’ efforts to ferry as many people onto Greek territories as possible, beginning earlier this year due to, amongst others, a more “migrant-friendly” policy by the radical leftist government in Athens.
One result of the clashes was that literally hundreds of irregular or illegal migrants headed for the port in the island’s capital, Mytilene, protesting what they called delays in getting them travel documents in order to leave the island.
Only minor injuries were reported, although women and children were shaken by the commotion of the hot-headed elements in the newest arrivals from the east.
A special coast guard squad was called in to block the path of the protesters and to stop the fighting between the foreign nationals.
