Game of Thrones breaks records

A huge night unfolded at the Emmy Award ceremony in Los Angeles with HBO’s Game of Thrones taking home the best drama series award for the first time in the show’s sixth season history. The show managed to get 12 awards from 24 nominations, breaking The West Wing’s record of nine awards at the 2000 Emmys. Apart from Best Drama, Game of Thrones took home the Emmys for best directing and best writing.

Viola Davis made history as the first woman of color to take the prize for outstanding actress in a drama for her performance in How to Get Away With Murder. She quoted Harriet Tubman in her acceptance speech. “The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity,” she said, adding that “you cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there.”
