A magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit Peru at 3:50 a.m. local time (8:50 GMT), northwest of Juliaca, US Geological Survey reported on Friday. The quake’s epicenter laid at a depth of 258 kilometers.

The latest major earthquake occurred in the region last week when a 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit the Peru-Ecuador border.
