European Council Prez. Tusk considering calling EU emergency Summit on refugee crisis

He is confident a solution will be reached on Monday’s meeting

President of the European Council Donald Tusk said Friday he would call an extra-ordinary European Conference Summit (EUCO) in September, if EU Justice and Interior Ministers failed to find common ground on the refugee crisis next Monday. EU Justice & Interior Ministers are scheduled to meet Monday, September 14 to discuss ways to deal with the explosive problem of the waves of refugees and migrants entering the EU. The EU proposed a quota system in May for relocating 40,000 refugees in Europe, but member-states blocked the plan, while European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker stated Wednesday that the May number should quadrupled and reach 160,000 with obligatory quotas. “If there are no specific signs of solidarity and unity by the Ministers (interior & Justice) on Monday, I will call an extra-ordinary #EUCO (European Conference) in September about the refugee crisis”, wrote Tusk in a tweet. He added that following his contacts over the past days he felt more hopeful that a solution was closer based on consent and frank solidarity.
