Greek Defence Minister P. Kammenos visits flooded Evros

Flood-stricken regions appear to be out of danger, but Greek authorities are on standby in case of more flooding

Defence Minister Panos Kammenos and the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (HNDGS) Chief General Mikhail Kostarakos are visiting flood-stricken areas along the course of the Evros River. The itinerary includes visits to Lagyna, Soufli and Poros. The latest reports show that the situation appears to be stabilizing in the area. The initial plan to have the army blow up a dam near Poros to divert the water to the plains of Ferres and protect the village was deemed unnecessary at this stage but may still go ahead of Poros is threatened with flooding. They are on standby to see if more problems will arise should floods of water be released upstream in Bulgaria or if there is more rain.
