Mountain of refugee life-jackets on Lesbos (shocking photos)

Near the beach of Molyvos

Thousands of life jackets piled up on a beach near the town Molyvos in the Greek island of Lesbos formed a small hill. The images taken by AFP photographer Aris Messinis indicate the proportions of the refugee crisis that has now reached other northern European countries, and led to Europe scrambling to find solutions while revealing divisions within EU member-states. Nearly 300,000 refugees have landed on the coasts of Greek islands in 2015. The treacherous journey has cost the lives of many, with the most recent being 17 people who drowned 2 days ago off the coast of Turkey in their attempt to reach Greece.
