Refugee flows rise over past 3 days in Chios

Total stands at nearly 12,000 in Aegean islands

With Turkey threatening to open the refugee floodgates into Europe after the European Parliament passed a non-binding resolution suspending its EU membership talks, the sudden spike in the numbers of refugees and migrants landing on Greek islands over the past three days is not a promising sign. 153 people arrived on the island of Chios, while 53 more have landed on Lesvos since last Friday. According to official police data, the island of Lesvos is currently hosting 5,918 refugees and migrants, Chios 3,701 and Samos 2,181, bring the total to 11,801.
